Surprised by God?

At some point I may stop being surprised by how amazing, gracious, encouraging, and present our God is, but don’t count on it being any time soon. He is far more than we could ever expect or imagine. One way that He continues to show us His provision is by the ongoing encouragement of people excited, eager, and almost giddy about partnering with us in the work that God is doing in Uganda. Let me explain…

This past weekend I was honored to be able to perform the wedding of one of our former youth ministry students, Julia Thomasson. Gina and I were blessed to get to know her now husband over the Pottspast few months as we helped them make plans for the next chapter of their lives. I can’t describe how humble, happy, and honored it made me to be asked to celebrate such an awesome thing with Julia and her family, as well as with our new friend, Michael Potts. It was so special to write a message about the love, peace, and hope that God demonstrates for us in the marriage relationship for a young woman I knew when she was in high school. Don’t get me wrong, I’ve done a few weddings before and each time it is special and meaningful to be asked, but this was my first youth group kid to wed and it was something else.

At the rehearsal and dinner, Gina and I were honored and so proud of the young woman she has become, and the man she has chosen to marry. Being with the Thomasson family at such a celebration was remarkable. And at the wedding on Saturday I was so excited and nervous that I actually asked, “Who gives this man to marry this woman?” True story. I couldn’t help but be over-joyed about being a part of their forever love story.

Wedding Thank YouAnd so after the wedding service, I’m waiting around for pictures and Gina has gone over to the reception. After a little bit, she comes back to where I am because she needed to show me something. She said that at the reception there was a table set up and one of the things on the table was a stack of these handouts…

It turns out that in place of favors for the wedding guests, Julia and Michael had decided to donate for the NEXT YEAR to God’s work in Uganda. They wanted to be a part of “testifying to the good news of God’s grace” to the ends of the Earth (Acts 20:24).

This is one story of many people that have joined in already. We have been praying since December that God would raise a team of supporters (prayer, financial, emotional, spiritual, etc.) for us as we follow His call to Uganda. And He continues to show up. In ways like this and in ways of other people saying, “Yes, we will pray for you” or “Yes, we want to support y’all.” And He continues to surprise us.

So thank you to Mr. and Mrs. Potts, and to all of our supporters. We are humbled and honored to join you in sharing Christ with the world.
