One of my favorite things about living in Uganda is hearing the many different languages. While sometimes it’s a little overwhelming to be surrounded by languages I don’t understand, I am reminded of how diverse our world really is. When I hear other people praying to God in their native tongue or are singing worship to our God in a variety of languages, it makes me think of heaven.
This world has so many different people, cultures, and languages. What an amazing God we have to create so many unique people! And while sometimes we get distracted by our differences, it is so refreshing to share the unity in Christ when I come together with brothers and sisters in Uganda and recognize there are so many amazing things we can celebrate about one another.
During my discipleship group times, we always start the day together with songs praising God as a focus for our day. There are 4 different languages represented in this group, not to mention the many other languages these ladies can speak. But our worship together is always in a variety of languages, and I love being able to share this time with them. To be unified in worship to our God in different languages is a blessing that not many people get to experience, and I never want to take it for granted.
We also have times together in prayer. And one of the most special times for me is when we divide into prayer partners: the ladies pray for each other in different languages. Sometimes, we go around in a circle and pray for one another, or other times we are praying at the same time for each other. While to some, it may be overwhelming to hear these ladies all praying in their unique languages, it has come to be a quiet time of reflection for me as I listen and appreciate the diversity of our group. We all come from different cultures, even from here in Uganda with different languages and tribes. But we can come together and recognize the beauty of being unified in following Jesus together, when we make Him our first priority. While we are continuing to learn about each other’s differences, we are also celebrating our similarities. I am humbled to be part of these discipleship groups, and I’m humbled to get the opportunity to get a small glimpse into what I hope heaven will be like one day.
